With the Election Commission of India scheduling the date for polls to Manipur legislative Assembly, the United Naga Council (UNC) has convened a meeting on January 7 to decide on whether to continue the ongoing blockade of National Highways in the State.
The blockade, which has been continuing since November 1 last year caused immense trouble to the people of the state and led to violence in different parts of the State.
“We have convened a meeting of all the UNC member organizations to discuss over the situation arising out of the blockade of NH 2 and NH 53. We are going to discuss the next strategy of our agitation in the January 7 meeting," said UNC General Secretary Milan Shimrey while talking to The Pioneer on Wednesday.
The meeting assumes significance considering the fact that the Election Commission of India today announced the dates for two phase polls in Manipur--first phase on March 4 for 38 Assembly constituency and second phase to be held on March 8 for 22 constituencies.
The UNC had called the blockade to protest against ruling Congress Government's decision to create seven new districts in that State.
While the Manipur government claims to have created the districts for ease of administration, the Nagas claim that two of the seven new districts have been created bifurcating Naga dominated areas.
