Ulfa chief's mother declines Govt's help, urges Gogoi to spend on flood-hit Assam

Miliki Baruah, the ailing mother of UlFA’s militant ‘commander’ Paresh Baruah, on Thursday declined offer of financial assistance by the Assam Government and urged Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to spend the money on the flood-hit people.

“I do not require the money. I have only a few days left in this world. Rather the Chief Minister should spend the amount for the betterment of people marooned by the floods in the State or to some other needy people,” 88-year-old Miliki Baruah told media in the hospital on Thursday.

It may be mentioned here that Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had announced a financial assistance of Rs1 lakh for the mother of one of India’s most wanted men — Paresh Baruah alias Paresh Asom.

The Assam Chief Minister had also said that the Assam Government may give safe passage to the Ulfa chief if he desires to meet his ailing mother in his native house at Jeraigaon in Dibrugarh District.

Miliki Baruah had been admitted to a private nursing home in Dibrugarh on Tuesday after she complained of palpitation and breathing trouble. According to the doctors she has been suffering from acute joint pain, low blood pressure and chronic cough.

“She was admitted to the intensive care unit and put on ventilator as her blood oxygen levels were low. She is being treated by a cardiologist and a general medicine doctor. Her condition is stable. She talked with her family members,” a doctor of the hospital said on Wednesday.

The Ulfa chief, who had worked with the Northeastern Frontier Railway (NFR) and one of the oil establishments in Dibrugarh during his youth, fled India in 1990 after the security forces’ launched one of the major operations against the outfit — Operation Rhino.

He has been staying out of the country since then.

Miliki lives with one of her sons at her home in the Jeraigaon area near Chabua in Dibrugarh district of Upper Assam.
