UlFA chief Paresh Barua declines Ravi Shankar's peace talks offer

A day after Art of living Founder and Spiritual leader Ravi Shankar appealed to the rebel outfits of the North-East India to shun violence and come for talks, anti-talk faction of Ulfa chief Paresh Baruah made it clear that the outfit do not want to participate in any forms of peace talks unless the Government of India is willing to take the independence of Assam into consideration.

In a statement issued to the media on Friday, Baruah said the outfit would like to decline to his request to join the ‘mainstream’ peace talks because they follow the revolutionary stream that will lead to an Independent Asom.

“You have repeatedly asked us to join in the false, biased and ridiculous peace talks held by the Indian government. We would like to decline your request again to join the ‘mainstream’ peace talks because we only follow the revolutionary stream that will lead to an Independent Asom. You have raised concerns over our armed struggle, we have picked up arms in order to protect ourselves not to threaten any individual or sovereign nation,” the elusive rebel leader said.

“Our struggles would not have gained recognition from the colonial Government of India or the world if we did not pick up arms for the independence of mother Asom. Our struggles will continue until our ultimate goal is achieved ,” Baruah said.

“I suggest you to stick to your pretentious religion and let us continue our journey to freedom,” he added in the statement.

On Thursday Sri Sri Ravi Shankar participated in a conference of Indigenous people of the northeast India organized by the pro-talk faction of Ulfa and some other organizations and said that he has been in touch with most of the rebel organization of the region over the issue of bringing them to peace talks.
