The city police have arrested two sailors, attached to the Naval Dockyard, Colaba, for allegedly stalking a 20-year-old woman during a procession on Mumbai.
Confirming the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-I) Manoj Kumar Sharma told The Pioneer on Sunday evening “Yes. It is true. Acting on a complaint by victim woman, the Colaba police arrested two Navy sailors. The Navy men were booked under sections 354-D (stalking) of Indian Penal Code.”
The two sailors were produced before a local court which released them on a bail.
The police said that the incident happened during a procession organised on the occasion of 126th birth anniversary of late Dr BR Ambedkar on Friday. The complainant-woman had participated in the procession taken out at Colaba in south Mumbai.
In her complaint, the complainant told the police that the two sailors were ogling constantly at her when the procession was passing Cooperage ground. The two sailors allegedly followed the victim up to some distance.
Upset over the alleged act of ogling by the two sailors, the victim confronted the two navymen who tried to misbehave once again. This led to a commotion in which some men in the procession came to the victim’s rescue and roughed up the two sailors who were in civil clothes.
While one sailor was arrested on the spot by the police, they took into custody the second one sometime later.
