Two people were killed and “four to five” others were feared trapped under the debris, when a huge boulder rolled onto half a dozen hut beneath, in a landslide at Antop Hill in north-central Mumbai on Wednesday morning.
After a prolonged spell of heavy rainfall that lashed the metropolis on Tuesday night, a huge boulder slid from a hillock, onto Devram Chawl, located on the Mistry Dargah Road at 8.12 am, trapping at least eight slum dwellers there.
The two persons who were killed in the mishap were identified as Sandip Avtar Kevate (22) and Ramavtar Pavaru Kevate (45). Another hutment dweller, identified as Salim Shaikh (27), was severely injured in the mishap.
The civic fire brigade and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel, who rushed to the scene shortly after the landslide, rescued two hutment dwellers trapped under the debris. Efforts were on all through the day to rescue “four to five” persons who were still trapped under the debris. “The fire brigade personnel are using a rock breaking machine, JCB equipment and dumpers in the rescue operation which is expected to continue late night,” a senior fire brigade official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
