The Tihar Jail premises in the Capital have witnessed yet another violent clash. Four of its inmates allegedly attacked their rival inmates with ice-pick, iron rods and a knife a few days ago. The jail administration is yet to find out how they got these weapons and was investigating the role of insiders. The four accused have been arrested.
Police said that the incident occurred in ward no-2 of Jail no-3 near the Block-B on July 21 evening when the inmates were going for dinner. "Two inmates, identified as Sandeep and Sonu, who were arrested in robbery cases, were going for dinner when they were waylaid by a gang of inmates outside Block-B," a senior police officer said. Sandeep and Sonu were stopped by Ajay, Vikram, Asif, Mukesh, Janu and Viru, who were carrying an ice-pick, iron rods and a knife. "After stopping them, they started abusing them and reportedly thrashed them mercilessly. The incident came to light when other inmates returned after eating dinner and found them in an unconscious condition," the officer added.
Police said that the other inmates informed the jail administration and the victims were taken to Central Hospital in Tihar Jail where they are recuperating. "The Tihar administration later informed the local police and during investigation, it emerged that incident was the outcome of a gang rivalry and later another group claimed that they were also beaten up by their rival group," a police officer said, adding two separate cases have been registered at Hari Nagar police station of West Delhi. Further investigation revealed that Vikram, Mukesh, Arif and Anil had allegedly planned the attack on Sandeep and Sonu. On Thursday, they were arrested and booked under Sections 147, 148, 307, 323, 148, 324 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code. "We are questioning them and trying to ascertain how they got the weapons," the officer added.
