In a major embarrassment for the Customs, CBI on Wednesday arrested two of its officers, including Deputy Commissioner C Madhavan, in connection with the smuggling in of 20 kgs of gold bars from Dubai to Kochi recently.
Besides, Madhavan, Preventive officer Sunil Kumar was also arrested, CBI sources said. The two would be produced before the CBI Special Court on Thursday.
Madhavan and Sunil were arrested under the Prevention of Corruption Act for abusing their official position. Another preventive officer, Sanjay Kumar Soni, is also listed as accused in the case.
The other accused in the case are Faiz T K, who was arrested from Delhi and brought to Kochi, Harris, his wife Arifa and Asifa.The smuggling racket came to light when Customs officials arrested Arifa and Asifa, who had managed to come out of the green channel allegedly with the help of customs officials.
