Tripura to form SIT to probe scribe's killing

The Tripura Government is going to institute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) soon to probe the brutal killing of television journalist Santanu Bhowmik during mob violence last week.

State Information and Finance Minister Bhanulal Saha said this on Tuesday while adding that the State Cabinet has taken the decision to institute the SIT after reviewing the progress of the case.

While the police had stated that the journalist was killed by supporters of the Indigenous Peoples' Front of Tripura (IPFT), the IPFT later termed it as a conspiracy hatched by the ruling left Government in the State to blame the organisation ahead of next year's polls.

Different journalist organisations and the BJP had demanded probe by Central Bureau of Investigation into the killing.

It may be mentioned here that the police had already arrested around three people and detained few more over the killing, the investigation is yet to make any headway.

The Minister said that the Cabinet has also decided to give Rs 10 lakh to the next kin of the victim.
