Tripura set to light up Myanmar homes soon

Published on:

Homes in Myanmar will soon be light up with power from India’s Northeast.

The State-owned ONGC Tripura Power Company ltd in Tripura is on the advanced stages of signing an agreement to export gas based power to the neighbouring country from November this year.

“We are on the final stages of clinching a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Government of Myanmar. Following the agreement, we are going to export gas based power from our plants in Tripura to Myanmar,” said ONGC Tripura Power Company ltd Managing Director, Satyajit Ganguly on Friday.

Ganguly was addressing the “NER Infrastructure Conclave 2015 - Tapping the True Potential of Northeast”, a mega infrastructure development conclave organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) in Guwahati on Friday.

It may be mentioned here that located at Palatana in Udaipur district of Tripura, the ONGC Tripura Power Company ltd generates 726.26 MW of power at present.

He said the PPA with Myanmar regarding the power export would continue for at least 15 years and the Central Electricity Regulatory Authority has also been involved and engaged in this exercise.

Ganguly further said power generation was no longer a problem in India but the problem related to its pricing and also on the front of distribution and transmission.

The senior official further disclosed the company had also discovered a few new gas blocks in Tripura for exploration in collaboration with other companies. He, however, refused to divulge much on the new discoveries and said the details would be shared at an appropriate time.
