An Army Major who shot into controversial prominence last year for strapping a youngster to an armoured vehicle was briefly detained by police on Wednesday after he allegedly attempted to check into a hotel along with a local girl. Police have ordered a high level probe into the incident.
Major leetul Gogoi, had booked a double-bed room online on Wednesday using his own credit card and subsequently arrived at the hotel situated in Dalgate pocket of Srinagar in a car. A Kashmiri girl was accompanying the officer. However, as he was filling up his contact details, the hotel staff asked him questions about the girl in his company. This triggered a hot word exchange forcing the hotel management to call police. Sources said a team of Khanyar police station arrived on the spot and whisked away the off-duty army officer and the girl. Police later ordered a high level probe into the matter. Before handing over Gogoi to his unit, police recorded his statement. "We have ordered a probe which will be headed by the Superintendent of Police North," Inspector General Police, Kashmir Swayam Prakash Pani said. Police said the girl had gone to meet an army officer in the hotel. However, the owner said they raised objection to the suspicious check-in that led to verbal altercation.
