TN to offer healthy, yummy noon meal to schoolchildren

Published on:

More than 68.3 lakh children studying in Government schools and Anganwadi Centres in Tamil Nadu were surprised on Friday, the 68th anniversary of Indian Independence.

From Monday, these children will start getting varieties in noon meal being distributed by schools and Anganwadi Centres in Tamil Nadu.

The monotonous noon meal diet, served in schools and Anganwadi Centres, will undergo a major change from Monday with the inclusion of egg masala on all five days of the week.

This was announced by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa after hoisting the national tricolour at Fort Saint George, the

headquarters of the State administration.

“Mine is a Government which protects and uplifts the poor,” declared Jayalalithaa who was given a thunderous applause by the crowd which had gathered for the flag hoisting ceremony.

Since assuming the role of Chief Minister of the State for the fourth time in 2011,  Jayalalithaa had ordered the revamping of noon meal scheme on an experimental basis in three schools in each district. More than 92,000 children studying in Government schools have been enjoying the mouth- watering noon meal since then.

From Monday, Tamil Nadu would become the first State in the country to offer delicious and nutritious noon meal to school children.

The variety noon meal is expected to bring down absenteeism in the school as the combination of egg masala and vegetable biriyani is an irresistible proposition to which no children would be able to say no.
