TN BJP leaders upset with Vaiko, want MDMK to go

The black flag demonstration to be staged by MDMK leader Vaiko on Monday at New Delhi and across Tamil Nadu has stirred a hornet’s nest in State BJP with many top leaders demanding the expulsion of the MDMK from the NDA. “Vaiko’s action has hurt our feelings and sentiments. We did not benefit from the alliance with MDMK and the PMK. Party leadership should start thinking of the future course of action,” a visibly upset Kuppuramu, the BJP candidate from Ramanath-apuram, told The Pioneer.

Vaiko is protesting against the invitation extended to Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Sri lankan President, for the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister on Monday. The fact that he has been mowed down by the AIADMK in the lok Sabha election or his party failed to win at least a single seat from the seven constituencies it contested has not made Vaiko see the writing on the wall that the Sri lankan Tamil issue has lost its relevance in Tamil Nadu. He is trying to intensify the campaign for independent Tamil Eelam in the island nation which would always remain a pipe dream.

Tamilaruvi Manian, who played a major role in forging the NDA alliance in Tamil Nadu, could not explain why Vaiko lost the election. “Though both of us discussed the issue for hours, we could not understand the reason for this defeat,” said Manian. Political commentators in Tamil Nadu are of the view that Ramdoss would harden his stance after Monday if his son Anbumani is not included in the Union Council of Ministers.

Political commentators like BR Haran point out the alliance with PMK, MDMK and the DMDK has not helped the BJP. “While the BJP candidates polled 22.2 lakh votes in seven constituencies, the DMDK which contested in 14 seats could poll only 20 lakh votes. It was PMK, MDMK and the DMDK which benefited from the alliance with BJP,” said Haran.
