TMC men on the rampage again

Mounting fresh attack on the family of the Birbhum woman, a victim of brutal police torture, the ruling Trinamool Congress on Thursday severely beat up her father-in-law before warning him of more such attacks if the case of custodial violence against the police officers and the Trinamool workers was not withdrawn immediately.

The woman from Sattor was a BJP supporter. Still recuperating from her wounds the victim was about a month ago picked up by senior police officials in a midnight raid, taken into a nearby forest and brutally beaten up. She was given broken limbs and nettle leaves were rubbed against her private parts before she was dumped in front of a nearby police station.

“They attacked me at the bus stand and asked me to tell my daughter-in-law to withdraw the case or face consequences,” the victim’s father-in-law SK Nazrul said adding he was beaten up when he refused to oblige them.

Her father and brother were also beaten up a few days ago. An NCW delegation had earlier visited the spot and went on record saying that they had not seen similar violence on women earlier.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident that further indicated Mamata Banerjee’s slackening control over her party goons a huge band of Trinamool workers led by Noapara Municipality chairman on Thursday attacked the Noapara Police Station in Barrackpore, beat up the men in uniform and got forcible release of the brother of the chairman who was earlier arrested by the police. A visibly helpless police team subsequently filed bailable charges against the accused.

Thursday’s was yet another instance of growing attacks on police men by the Trinamool workers. Several police men had lost their lives or critically in the past three years after being attacked by the Trinamool men.
