BJP president Amit Shah was yet again forced to discontinue his speech initiated by him on farmers’ issues after the members of Trinamool Congress protested vehemently in the Rajya Sabha over the NRC issue.
As Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu’s efforts to facilitate a smooth running of the House and to give Shah an opportunity since he had already spoken for few minutes turned futile, the House was adjourned for the day.
This was the second time Shah could not complete his statement with the first one being on National Register of Citizens (NRC) last week when the TMC members protested in the Well of the House.
BJP on its part said the Congress is supporting Trinamool Congress’s “blockade” of the Rajya Sabha to prevent its president Amit Shah from speaking in the House. Speaking outside the Parliament, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad called it undemocratic and a new low in parliamentary democracy.
The House was adjourned twice in quick succession after the lunch break before calling it a day, even after NDA allies and other Opposition parties including Congress, BJD, SP, AIADMK, JD(U), Shiv Sena among others insisted that the debate be continued.
Shah speech was disrupted by TMC members who trooped into the Well raising slogans and demanding that their privilege notice under Rule 267 that prescribes suspension of all business to take up a matter, be admitted.
