In yet another incident of alleged Trinamool Congress-induced campus violence in West Bengal, a university campus at Raiganj on Monday literally turned into a battlefield of sorts leaving a number of students injured, sources said.
Bullets were fired allegedly by the supporters of Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad as they clashed with Congress Chhatra Parishad students for the ‘control’ of the Raiganj University College campus.
Chhatra Parishad district president was severely injured along with many others, said Congress district president Mohit Sengupta. Six rounds were fired, he maintained. State Education Minister Partho Chatterjee, however, rejected claims of any involvement of the ruling party students’ arm saying the skirmish was Congress’ internal affair.
“Trinamool has turned West Bengal education institutions into mafia dens,” Sengupta said. “They want to control the college campuses throughout the State in order to earn lakhs of rupees when admission for each academic session starts.”
The Monday’s incident took place within a week of the alleged lynching of a Congress student leader at Sabang in West Midnapore district by Trinamool Congress goons.
Meanwhile, a section of Congress leaders on Monday said they would move the High Court seeking CBI investigation into Sabang murder case.
“We want a CBI investigation both into the murder of the student and also on the conduct of the local SP Bharati Ghosh whose action has been suspect regarding impartial probe,” Congress leader Abdul Mannan said.
The SP had earlier said on record that those arrested or named in the FIR were not the real culprits and that they had not carried any weapons of assault on the said day. Making her statement even before the investigations had begun she said, “Not only that these boys had not assaulted but they were nowhere near the scene on that day,” leading a hue and cry in the Opposition.
A section of West Bengal civil society was also likely to lodge a complaint against the SP with President Pranab Mukherjee as also with the Home Ministry. “The SP has no right to remain in the IPS cadre. Her designation as an IPS should be taken away and a representation to this effect will be given to the Home Ministry,” Congress sources said.
