In a major development, the prestigious Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) on Sunday revoked the termination of as many as 115 teaching and non-teaching staff members, following an assurance given by the Tata Education Trust (IET) that it would  make necessary funds available for paying salaries of the affected staff members.

The development has come as a huge relief to the 55 faculty members and 60 non-teaching staff members working on its four campuses in Mumbai Mumbai, Tuljapur, Guwahati and Hyderabad.

Ongoing discussions with the TET have provided an assurance that resources will be made available to the TISS to resolve the issue. TET has committed to releasing funds for the salaries of TET project/programme faculty and non-teaching staff,” the TISS’ Registrar said in a statement issued to the media late in the evening.

The announcement came two days after 115 teaching and non-teaching faculty members were issued letters of termination. “The letter issued to all concerned TET programme faculty and non-teaching staff on June 28, 2024 stands withdrawn with immediate effect. They are requested to continue their work , and their salaries will be released as soon as the TET support grant is received by the Institute,” the TISS’ Registrar said.

Established in 1936 as a Deemed University, the TISS is fully funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC). It is currently governed by the TISS society in accordance with the mandates of the UGC.
