Municipal elections in Tirupati are scheduled for Nov. 1, and the district administration says it has completed its administrative, security and logistical preparations for a free, fair and peaceful vote. District Collector and District Election Officer Dr. S. Venkateswar made the announcement Saturday.
Voting will run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. More than 90% of voter slips have already been delivered to residents, according to the report.
Venkateswar said 2,500 police personnel have been deployed across the district to maintain law and order.
Hyper-sensitive and sensitive polling booths will be monitored by webcasting. Where network connectivity is weak, video recording will serve as the alternative. Independent micro-observers have also been placed at every polling station to check that procedures are followed strictly.
Venkateswar, joined by Municipal Corporation Commissioner Jayakrishna, inspected the main election material distribution hub at SV Arts College. The officials reviewed the dispatch of ballot boxes, ballot papers and other poll material. They also checked transport arrangements and basic amenities for the polling parties heading out.
For voter convenience, special queues have been arranged for pregnant women, lactating mothers, senior citizens and people with disabilities. NSS volunteers will assist them on site.
Venkateswar confirmed that liquor outlets across the municipal areas have been closed in line with Model Code of Conduct rules, to prevent any disruption.
He urged all eligible citizens to vote without fear. He also asked election staff to carry out their duties with complete impartiality and in strict adherence to Election Commission guidelines, to safeguard local democracy.
