Tihar Jail bends to rules of yoga

Preparations for International Yoga Day are not only going on at Rajpath and various Government departments, they are also going on inside the premises of Tihar Jail with around 10,000 inmates training in yoga every day since May 20.

According to Sanjay Kumar Ambarta, Deputy Superintendent of Central Jail, Tihar, yoga was always a part of daily activities in Tihar Jail. "However, specific preparations are going on for the International Yoga Day since May 20 in all the jails. Trained yoga teachers from an NGO are coming every day to train the inmates according to the Government protocol issued by the Ministry of AYUSH," he said.

While the participation in yoga classes is voluntary, 10,000 out of the total strength of 14,000 inmates have been regularly participating in the training. Sanjay Ambarta shares that most of the inmates have already learned different asanas of yoga and they are excited about the programme on June 21.

"While training sessions are going on in all the jails, a special programme will be conducted in jail no. 1 on International Yoga Day where around 2000 inmates will perform together in a grand way. Simultaneous sessions will be held in other jails and wards as well," he said.

Tihar will also be following the same schedule and same asanas as will be followed on Rajpath. Even officials who will be on morning duty on that day will be participating in the grand event, said Sanjay.
