Three killed in south Kashmir ahead of polls

A day before campaigning ends in south Kashmir’s sensitive Anantnag parliamentary constituency, militants struck at two places in Tral pocket of Pulwama district killing three political workers, including a father-son duo. One of the slain workers was a sarpanch affiliated to the Congress and another was a village headman.

Sources said that unidentified gunmen entered into the house of sarpanch Ghulam Nabi Mir at Batagund village in south Kashmir’s Tral pocket, 40 kilometers from here at around 9 pm. They showered a volley of bullets on Mir killing him instantly. His son Firdaus Ahmad was also hit by bullets. He was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to wounds.

Mir was a former Block Development Officer who contested panchayat polls in 2010 and later joined the Congress. He was a close relative of a senior Congress functionary Ghulam Muhammad Mir, who accompanied Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during a recent tour to the militant-infested area. His son was a Government employee.
