Threats from groups in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan figure in RATS meet in SCO

Situation in Afghanistan with special focus on dealing with the threat from groups active in the Taliban-ruled nation figured prominently in a meeting here on Monday of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) under the aegis of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation.

Counter terrorism experts from Pakistan, China and Russia besides host India took part in the four-day conclave starting Monday.

A three-member Pakistani delegation is taking part in the meet.

It is the first such representation from across the border since Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif assumed charge.  India had participated in a similar meeting of the RATS in Pabbi, Pakistan last year.

"I thank India for hosting the key meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's anti-terror body Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure in New Delhi today. The security and humanitarian situation has worsened in Afghanistan over the past 9 months," Afghan envoy Farid Mamundzay tweeted.

"We expect this meeting to raise and propose solutions to all important issues related to the security situation in Afghanistan. Sincere regional security cooperation particularly from neighbouring countries is the only way forward for peace and development in Afghanistan and in the region," he added.

India has not recognised the Taliban regime in Afghanistan and has been pitching for the formation of a truly inclusive government in Kabul besides insisting that Afghan soil must not be used for any terrorist activities against any country.
