In what could send more shivers down the ruling TMC and Opposition CPI(M) spines, about 40,000 people from the Trinamool, left Front and even the Congress have joined the BJP in the Jangalmahal area of Bengal, State party president Rahul Sinha has said.
Sinha who on Monday held a series of meetings at lodha-shuli, Gopiballavpur, Nayagram and Mohanpur in Jangalmahal area said people were joining the BJP in hordes as they feel the saffron outfit was presented the only hope for their social, political and economic deliverance. He said though large number of people were seeking membership, the BJP was allowing entry only after strict screening.
Prominent among those who joined the BJP are CPI(M)’s Antara Bhattacharjee a former district board chairperson and Ashok Senapati a senior district leader of the TMC. Such has been the rush for membership that the party had exhausted its membership forms and had to re-print them, Sinha said.
