Sharad Yadav is set to be elected as the chief of Janata Dal (United) for the third time in a row. The Madhepura MP was the only candidate to file nomination for the April 14 election to the post of JD(U) president, paving the way for his unchallenged election.
Yadav had been at the helm of party for two terms. The party constitution allows only two consecutive terms to a president. Sources, however, say that party President is empowered to amend the Constitution and the necessary amendment has already been carried out on April 5 to make sure that Yadav gets the third term. The amendment could be ratified at the national executive meeting if the need arose.
The two-day national executive meeting of the JD(U), which will put its stamp on the election of the new president, will also discuss in detail the political situation in the country.
As someone who has is seen a staunch Congress baiter, Yadav’s re-election as JD(U) chief comes ahead of the 2014 lok Sabha election, which will also be keenly watched for how the relationship between the Bihar-based party and the BJP unfolds amidst growing clamour for a “national role” to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
JD(U), particularly Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is opposed to Modi’s projection as NDA’s prime ministerial candidate. “We will take stock of the political situation prevailing in the country and related issues at our
party’s national executive to be held in New Delhi on April 13-14,” Kumar had said in Patna on Monday.
“We will also apprise NDA of our deliberations and opinion on various political issues,” he had said to repeated questions on his stand that BJP announce its prime ministerial candidate in advance.
