Thakor quits Cong ahead of Assembly polls in Gujarat

In a setback to Congress party in Gujarat ahead of the Assembly polls, a senior leader representing OBC community – Jagdish Thakor resigned from the party on Tuesday.

59-year-0ld Thakor is Member of legislative Assembly from Dehgam Assembly constituency in North Gujarat and having sway in Tadpada Koli community in the State. He was also Member of Parliament from Patan parliamentary constituency in North Gujarat.

Though Thakore was not available to comment on his decision, sources close to him confirmed that he had sent resignation to the party high command in Delhi. According to sources, he was feeling neglected in the party since some times and was not happy with the State Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki.

When contacted, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) spokesman Manish Doshi said that the State unit of Congress had not yet received his resignation. According to him, he was not holding any key position in party organisation.

A senior leader in the Gujarat Congress said that Thakor’s resignation came at time when the party was gaining some ground in wake of ongoing pro-quota Patidar stir and Dalit agitation post flogging of Dalit youth near Una town in Saurashtra.

“Upcoming Assembly poll would be the golden opportunity for the grand old party to return to power after 20 odd years in the State. If such incidences of resignation of senior leaders would occur in the party, it would be difficult for the Opposition party to perform well in the Assembly polls next year,” he lamented.
