Tension grips Itanagar; Section 144 imposed

Amid political uncertainty, tension has gripped Arunachal Pradesh capital, Itanagar on Thursday with supporters of Chief Minister Nabam Tuki agitating in front of the Raj Bhavan and shouting slogans against Governor JP Rajkhowa, forcing the district administration to impose section 144 of CrPC in and around the capital town.

The protests by the supporters of Tuki came in the wake of the Gauhati High Court’s verdict on Wednesday, vacating its earlier order of keeping in abeyance the decisions of the State legislative Assembly earlier last month.

A large group of people, who are supporters of the Chief Minister Nabam Tuki went to the Raj Bhavan on Thursday morning and held a dharna in front of the Raj Bhavan. They also burnt tyres and blocked the three roads that leads to Raj Bhavan and shouted slogans against the Governor JP Rajkhowa.

Although a single Judge Bench of the Gauhati High Court comprising Justice Hrishikesh Roy has kept in abeyance the impugned decisions of the Assembly, the court of Justice BK Sharma had vacated the earlier order of the court.

It may be mentioned here that there have been dramatic developments in the Arunachal Pradesh since the Governor JP Rajkhowa preponed the session of the Assembly to December 16 last year. While Tuki and his supporters boycotted the preponed session of the House, a section of dissident Congress legislators, BJP legislators held the session of the Assembly in a community hall and in a hotel and impeached the Speaker Nabam Rebia and moved no confidence motion against the Chief Minister Tuki.

Following the developments, the Arunachal Pradesh Speaker Nabam Rebia moved the Supreme Court, which had on Wednesday directed that Governor JP Rajkhowa not to convene the State Assembly till 18 January this year.
