At least ten people were feared killed at a remote village in Mizoram’s lunglei district after flash floods and landslides hit three districts on Tuesday.
The body of one of the deceased was recovered and search is on for the rest of the missing persons, who had been washed away by the surging waters from Carnafulu river. Police said that the incident took place at remote Thairungkai village in the district.
It may be mentioned here that incessant rains have been lashing different parts of Mizoram, including State capital Aizawl, since last Sunday and the Carnafulu river and all its tributaries were reported to be in spate during the last few days.
Official sources said that at least three districts including lunglei, Aizawl and Serchip were affected by the floods and over 450 houses were either submerged by floos waters or damaged by landslide triggered by incessant rains.
The flood waters and landslides have also cut off the National Highway 54, the only road that connect Mizoram with Assam.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh who was scheduled to visit some of the areas along the Indo-Myanmar border on Tuesday had to cancel his aerial visit as the chopper could not take off due to rain. The Home Minister, who was also scheduled to go to airport by air after his border visit, was later taken to the lengpui airport by road from where he returned to New Delhi.
