Teesta's plea on hearing adjournment rejected

In yet another jolt to social activist Teesta Setalvad, the Gujarat High Court rejected her application to adjourn hearing in connection with the Gulbarg society fund embezzlement case schedule on Friday. Teesta’s advocate Mihir Thakore mentioned before Justice J B Pardiwala to adjourn the matter of the three anticipatory bail applications fixed for hearing on Friday on the grounds that his clients want to prepare the case better and to compile the documents to place before the court.

However, additional advocate general Prakash Jani and special public prosecutor Ajay Choksi vehemently opposed the application arguing that the matter is pending before the High Court since last ten months. “Teesta and others’ plea to adjourn the matter for better preparing the case and submission of some documents is nothing but to delay the matter,” they said.

After hearing both the parties, the court agreed to the arguments of Jani and Choksi and asked Mihir Thakore why are you coming with this plea after ten monthsIJ  “Why have you not prepared the case during the period of ten-long monthsIJ,” said the Court  adding that  as the date for hearing was fixed in consultation with counsels of both the parties, the question of adjournment does not arise. While rejecting Teesta’s application, the court directed that the matter will be heard on its schedule date on Friday.

Ahmedabad Police had lodged FIR following complaint from a member of riot hit Gulbarg Society against Setalvad, her husband Javed Anand, Tanvir Jafri, son of the slain Congress leader Ehsan Jafri and two office-bearer of the society.
