The Central leather Research Institute (ClRI), a lab under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has a task cut out for it: To develop high quality affordable sports shoes which can help the players compete at international events like Olympics.
Union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Harsh Vardhan said on Thursday that the ClRI has been given a year’s time to develop international standards sports shoes which are within the reach of all the players in the country particularly those from poor economic background.
“Shoes and sports equipments play an important role in enhancing the skills of the players. But in the country like ours, many are deprived of such sports and items due to price issues. As a result, despite having talent, they fail to excel in the games,” he told reporters here.
ClRI Director Dr.B Chandrasekaran said that they will pull all strings to achieve the target as presently shoes being sold by the top class companies are out of the reach of many in the country.
It's challenge for us, but we will do our best, said Chandrasekaran.
