Self-styled folk singer and poet Kovan alias Sivadoss, who was arrested by Chennai Police on charges of sedition for allegedly writing highly indiscriminating poems targeting Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was on Tuesday released on bail by a Chennai court.
Aadinathan, principal sessions judge, Chennai, granted conditional bail to Kovan, a leader of the People’s Art and literary Association, a frontal organisation promoted by the CPI(Ml). Kovan’s arguments was that he wrote poems demanding closure of liquor shops in the State. But even those who criticised his arrest had announced that what he wrote against Jayalalithaa was neither agreeable or acceptable to the civil society.
The Chennai Police had arrested Kovan on October 30 under IPC Sections 124-A (sedition), 153 (wanton provocation with intent to cause riots) and 505 (1).
He had been remanded to police custody by the court the same day.
