Take action against suspended doctor: MCI to UP Council

Published on:

The ethics panel of the Medical Council of India (MCI) has asked the UP State Medical Council to take appropriate action against Dr Shishir Kumar, former Chief Medical Supervisor of the Bulandsahar district hospital in UP, who was suspended last year for utilising non-medical staff for treatment of a patient. MCI also called for action against two other doctors for negligent in their duties and thus violating the medical ethics.

The MCI’s ethics panel headed by Dr Sneh Bhargava had taken cognizance of the media reports that a sweeper and a ward boy had applied stitches on the wounds of an injured patient under the supervision of CMS Shishir Kumar while two other doctors R Verma and Sachin Kumar were found to be negligent in discharging their duties.

Soon after the incident came into limelight, the CMS was shifted to other hospital and later suspended following a probe ordered by UP Health Minister Ahmed Hasan. The UP Government had intervened into the matter following lot of hue and cry by the public and media alleging declining standard of the health facility in the State.

Taking serious note in the matter, the MCI’s panel after perusing the inquiry report in the incident found the trio doctors were lacking in their duties. Dr Shishir Kumar was accused of having no effective administrative control in the hospital while Dr R Verma and Dr Sachin Kumar who were on emergency duty on the day of the incident took place were found negligent in discharging their duties.

“In view of the findings of the enquiry report submitted by the DGHS, UP, the Ethics Committee has referred the matter to UP State Medical Council for immediate action against Dr. Shishir Kumar, Dr R Verma and Dr Sachin Kumar. They have been asked to intimate the action to the MCI,” said an official from the Union Health Ministry.

Sources said that as a punishment, the State Medical Council may suspend the license of the three erring doctors for a certain period.
