In a temporary relief to social activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand, the Gujarat High Court extended stay on their arrest till August 26 in connection with the alleged Gulbarg Society fund embezzlement case involving Rs1.51 crore. Apart from Setalvad and her husband, the stay on arrest would also apply to slain Congress MP Ehsan Jafri’s son, Tanvir, Gulbarg Society’s chairman and secretary - Salim Singhi and Feroz Gulzar in the same case as Justice AJ Desai adjourned the hearing following the counsel of Setalvad and others were not present before the court.

Setalvad and others had sought anticipatory bail from Gujarat High Court  following a sessions court in Ahmedabad rejected their anticipatory bail plea on March 25 this year as the prima facie documentary evidence were against them as per the court. An FIR was filed by the Ahmedabad police against Setalvad and others for usurping Rs1.51 crore collected as donation fro turning riot hit Gulbarg society into a museum.
