In an unrelated development, statues of eminent personalities continued ‘suffer’ at the hands of mischief mongers: this time a group of miscreants smearing the statue of first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in black at Katwa town in Burdwan district.
The face of the bust was found at Katwa a pilgrimage town in East Burdwan district, police said even as the Congress immediately lay the blame at BJP door though the latter denied charges.
The incident that took place late on Saturday evening follows similar incidents in Kolkata and Hooghly where the statues of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee were smeared and Tripura where the statue of Russian Bolshevik leader V.I. lenin was pulled down with the help of a bulldozer.
Statues of B.R. Ambedkar and Ramasamy Periyar were also smeared by miscreants in U.P. and Tamil Nadu early this month.
“Katwa municipality chairman and local MlA Rabindranath Chattopadhyay reacted to the incident saying the “BJP is behind this trend of blackening the face of national icons. They don’t seem to understand that by doing so they are only insulting the nation as a whole.”
