The Assam Government has decided to initiate a special branch of the Assam police as a autonomous organisation for effective intelligence gathering with a dedicated cadre of Intelligence officers.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the State Security Commission headed by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at his official residence on Wednesday evening.
The meeting also decided to form a Research and Analysis Centre with multi-disciplinary experts for analysing the socio-economic and cultural developments by collating information from all possible sources. The decision assumes significance considering the fact that the National Security Guard (NSG) Director General Jayant Narayan Chaudhury while addressing a press conference on the occasion of NSG’s 30th Raising Day on Thursday said that the country faces combined threat from both IS and Al-Qaeda.
The NSG DG, who had served as the Assam’s Director General of Police before joining his present assignment, has also warned of multi-city terror attack in the country by the Islamic terrorists.Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had also recently admitted about the jehadi threat to Assam and said that the fundamentalist forces have long been trying to set up bases here.
It may be mentioned here that the Assam police had recently arrested nine persons for their links with the October 2 blast in Burdwan in West Bengal and Bangladesh based Islamic terror outfit Jamatul Mujahideen (JMB).
