Speeding Merc kills one, mob vandalise 78 cars in Kolkata

In yet another incident of drunken driving, a speeding Mercedes allegedly being run by a woman hit three scooterists in the small hours of Sunday, sources said. One of the victims Abhijit Pandey, 22, died on way to the hospital while two others were fighting for their lives.

The incident sparked a backlash in which about a hundred people armed with sticks and rods forayed into an upscale apartment Fort Oasis at Kolkata’s Ballygunge area and ransacked nearly 78 vehicles even as the terrorised residents watched the attack from their windows.

The accident happened at about 3 am when a speeding Mercedes driven by a woman on the high rammed into a stationary scooter which had gone out of fuel before speeding away. Apart from the driver there was another woman and a man inside the car, sources said.

The occupants of the car, which had automatically come to a halt after the accident, fled the spot and were still at large, said police, adding however that the owner and the driver had been identified.

Meanwhile, as words tracing the driver’s address to the neighbouring Fort Oasis, an upmarket highrise spread, about a hundred strong mob attacked the building ransacking the lounge and smashing the cars parked inside.

The car of local councilor was also vandalised, sources said alleging the police arrived late when most of the damage had taken place.
