Special tag issue stalls AP Assembly for second day

The issue of special category status rocked the Andhra Pradesh Assembly for the second consecutive day on Friday with the Opposition YSR Congress party members stalling the proceedings.

After twice adjourning the House briefly, Speaker Kodela Sivaprasad Rao adjourned it till Saturday.

Ugly scenes were witnessed with the Treasury and Opposition benches accusing each other of resorting to high-handedness and violence in the House. At one stage scuffle broke out between the YSRCP members and the marshals who were called in to the House to control the situation.

"It was painful to see Opposition members attacking the podium of the Speaker and the marshals," the Speaker said. He said it was unfortunate that the members behaved in an uncivilised manner and didn't cooperate in conducting the proceedings.

Minister P Sujata described it as "darkest day" in the history of the Assembly when the Opposition members tried to assault the Speaker.

But the YSRCP member denied the charge and alleged the Government had deployed the police inside the House to suppress and curb the rights of the Opposition to protest.

"Don't we have a right to express our resentment and raise slogans", asked YSRCP leader Ch Bhaskar Reddy. He alleged that the ruling TDP used the marshals to attack the Opposition members.
