BJP leader writes to PM to direct CBI to appeal against HC verdict

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to direct the CBI to appeal against Delhi High Court’s verdict quashing the summons to Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s private secretary Vincent George. In a letter to Modi on January 5, Swamy alleged that CBI’s counsels “were carrying the brief of UPA Government” and provided escape route to George, who was booked by the CBI in disproportionate assets case in 2001.

In July 2013, CBI filed closure report in the case, though they had conducted raid and found incriminating evidences against George. The trial court had rejected CBI’s version and issued summons to George. On August 2013, George approached Delhi High Court. On December 22, 2014, Justice VP Vaish quashed the trial court’s summons. Sonia’s private secretary was booked for amassing wealth during his tenure as PA to Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi during 1985 to 1989.

“In 2004, the UPA came to power and immediately pressured CBI to put this strong case in cold storage. About 12 years after registering of the said FIR, CBI was compelled to file a closure report and thus enabled several relatives of Vincent George to flee the country,” said Swamy.

Swamy said one Sabu, a close relative of George, was a key witness in the case was allowed to leave the country to US by the UPA Government. “Sabu was facing a probe by CBI in connection with several cases linked to terrorist Dawood Ibrahim’s money trails. He was the manager of Delhi Unit of Dawood-linked and now defunct company East West Airlines. He was arrested by CBI for sheltering Dawood aides in the guest houses of East West Airlines,” pointed out Swamy.

“I, therefore, urge you in keeping with our party’s election promise of providing a clean Government to direct the CBI to appeal against Delhi High Court verdict with fresh instructions to the CBI counsels, who still carry the brief of the previous UPA Government to save the corrupt near and dear to Sonia Gandhi, to pursue the case with vigour in the appeal against the quashing of the said summons,” Swamy said in his letter.
