Enraged by the killing of TDP MLA Sarveshwara Rao and his associate Soma by the CPI Maoist ultras, their supporters attacked two police stations and set them on fire.
Police officials said that the angry supporters of the two victims targeted the police station in Araku and Dumbriguda and set fire to the police station buildings, its furniture and record. Two wheelers parked outside were also burnt.
The angry mob was shouting against the policemen and held them responsible for the incident. They alleged that negligence by the Dumbriguda sub-inspector was responsible for the killings. Angry protestors also beat up two policemen while others escaped to save themselves.
It was after a gap of one and a half decades that the Maoists have targeted a big tribal leader in this belt. On March 18, 2004 they had killed Venkatraju, husband of State Tribal Welfare Minister M Manikumari.
