The terror attack mounted by the Hizbul militants on an Army convoy near Srinagar had its effect in distant Bankura district of West Bengal where the wife of a slain jawan committed suicide failing to bear the shock of her husband’s death.
Piu Nandi, the wife of Aditya Nandi the slain jawan, ended her life by setting herself afire, sources in the district police administration said.
“She was initially not informed about the incident but got the wind of it and before we could react she set herself afire,” a neighbour said, adding the duo had married just about a year ago. “The body has been sent for post-mortem and it seems a case of suicide,” SP Mukesh Kumar said.
Aditya Nandi was one of the eight jawans who were killed when Hijbul Mujahideen terrorists attacked an Army convoy at Bemina near Srinagar. The terrorist fired from both sides of the convoy near a hospital on the Air Port-lal Chowk Road. Apart from the dead eleven jawans were injured in the attack that took place on Monday a day before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi were to visit the State.
