Six people were injured in hot water spillage in unit one of the 1,000-MW Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant on Wednesday. “It was a minor incident which occurred during routine maintenance work.
Hot water spilled out when a valve was opened by one of the employees. Six people suffered burns injury and they were rushed to the hospital. Two of them have 50 per cent burns but all are out of danger. There is no radiation leak as made out by a section of the media,” RS Sundar, project director, KNPP told The Pioneer over telephone from the accident site.
Engineers of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India ltd (NPCIl) are struggling hard to make the unit one of the KNPP operational. Though the plant was to generate power commercially in December 2007, there is no indication now about the exact date of commercial production. The NPCIl in its website has mentioned that the Kudankulam plant would go commercial by June 2014.
