GUWAHATI: The front trolley of the locomotive hauling the Silchar-Guwahati Express derailed in the Lumding-Badarpur hill section of Assam on Thursday morning, disrupting services on the route, the Northeast Frontier Railway said. All passengers were reported safe.
The 15616 Silchar-Guwahati Express derailed between Badarpur and Sukritipur stations around 8.50 am. The rear portion of the train and all passenger coaches were pushed back to Badarpur, and the train was short-terminated there.
"All passengers are safe, and no casualties or injuries have been reported. A few trains running in the section are being regulated en route, while restoration work is being undertaken under the supervision of senior railway officials," the NFR said in a statement.
The corresponding Guwahati-Silchar Express scheduled to leave on Thursday has been cancelled. Several other trains, including the Sealdah-Silchar Express, Sairang-Kolkata Express, Agartala-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express, Agartala-Sealdah Express and Kolkata-Sairang Express, have been controlled at different locations.
The Lumding-Badarpur section is a single-line hill stretch through the Barak Valley and is prone to slips during the monsoon and post-monsoon months. Railway officials did not immediately say what caused the derailment.
