Pujab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh on Tuesday held discussion with former BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, on Tuesday and said that the cricketer-turned-politician is “inclined” to bat for the party during the 2017 polls. Capt Amarinder Singh said that Sidhu was all set to play his new innings with the Congress party but “the final call on contesting polls or not is his”. Former Amritsar MP has been keeping his cards close to his chest over his next political move ever since his Awaaz-e-Punjab, a non-political front, disintegrated after its prominent members - Balwinder Singh Bains and Simarjit Singh Bains - joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). later, other founding member - Olympian Pargat Singh, along with Sidhu’s wife Dr Navjot Kaur joined the Congress party.
Although Dr Sidhu gave clear indications that her husband would come into Congress fold by saying that the “body has to follow the soul”, Sidhu is yet to make a formal announcement. Amarinder, who had earlier described Sidhu as “undisciplined”, met him in Delhi and held detailed talks. Confirming the meeting, Amarinder said Sidhu was “inclined” to support the Congress and would soon make an announcement regarding his plan. “I can tell you that I have met him. I hope very soon he will be making his announcement. I found him in a very positive frame of mind. I hope it will be a positive decision,” said Capt Amarinder. The former CM said he does not think that Sidhu is interested in contesting the Amritsar seat and is likely to campaign for the party. “The way he is talking, I feel he would like to campaign for the Congress, but that he would announce himself,” he added.
