A day before the release of controversial Bollywood film 'Shorgul', which touches the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, uneasy clam prevails in Uttar Pradesh with Saffron outfits demanding a ban while a fatwa has been issued against lead actor Jimmy Shergil for hurting the sentiments of Muslim community. Meanwhile, the State Government has issued orders for strict vigil around theatres where the film is set to be screened.
District Magistrate of Muzaffarnagar Dinesh Kumar Singh said, "There is no ban on the film. This seems like a publicity stunt. We did receive requests from social organisations to ban the movie. Since we have not seen it, hence no decision has been taken. It is up to the theatre owners to decide whether to screen the movie or not," he said over telephone.
BJP MlA Sangeet Som, who has been opposing the film, told The Pioneer from Meerut that several outfits will demonstrate if the film is released in UP. "The film will certainly create another rift between the two communities and hence the Government should ban it," he said.
