The ruling BJP found itself on the defensive in the Maharashtra legislative Council on the first day of the Budget Session on Monday, as the Shiv Sena joined the Opposition in its clamour for the suspension of a BJP-supported Prashant Paricharak for allegedly insulting the wives of soldiers posted in border areas of the country.

leader of the Opposition Dhananjay Munde of the NCP condemned the statement made by Paricharak at a public meeting and demanded the suspension of Paricharak from the House.

The Congress and the Sena members also joined Munde in the demand for Paricharak’s suspension from the House.

Addressing an election rally in western Maharashtra Paricharak had said, “Army personnel, particularly soldiers, belonging Punjab, stay put at military camps in the border areas of the country all through the year. One such soldier, who was away from home for the whole year, receives a call from home and receives news that he has become father of a baby boy. On hearing the news, the soldier concerned distributes sweets to fellow soldiers”.

Senior Shiv Sena legislator and party’s spokesperson Dr Neelam Gorhe was aggressive in her condemnation of Paricharak.

“Had Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray been alive at this juncture, he would have demanded that Paricharek be hanged. Apart from suspending Paricharak from the House, we want that State Government register an FIR against Paricharak for insulting the wives of soldiers posted in border areas,” Gorhe said.
