The Women and Child Development Ministry has sought a probe into the death of a 14-year-old school student from Sherwood College, Nainital. The student allegedly died due to the negligence of the school authorities.
WCD Minister Maneka Gandhi has written to the Bishop of Agra, who is also the head of the Governing Council of Sherwood College, asking for an “impartial probe” into the death of the student.
Shaan Prajapati, a student of Class IX, had died on November 14 in a private hospital in Noida, allegedly after the school authorities denied him timely treatment for septicaemia. The family alleges that if the school authorities had acted in time, the boy could have been saved.
The letter, dated November 19, a copy of which is addressed to Prem Prakash Habil, Bishop of the Diocese Agra and the chairman of the governing body of Sherwood College, reads: “Kindly consider an impartial inquiry against the principal, staff and the doctor on duty and take appropriate action in this matter at the earliest.” The Minister has sought a reply within a week.
Meanwhile, the victim’s mother, Neena Shreshtha, met Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala on Friday and asked him to look into the matter for a fair probe by the Indian Government. Earlier, she had already lodged her protest with the Indian embassy in Kathmandu.
Koirala has assured the family of raising the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the SAARC Summit. He also said that he would talk to the Indian ambassador in Kathmandu regarding the case and seek immediate action.
