Bodies of seven people from Assam, who lost their lives during the devastating earthquake in Nepal on last Saturday, will be brought back to the State. Assam Home Commissioner lS Changson said on Monday that the Indian Air Force will airlift 12 bodies from Kathmandu to New Delhi and seven of them will be sent to Assam. “Once they reach New Delhi, we are planning to bring them back to Assam,” Changson said while interacting with the media.
Changson said they have received information that a total of 120 people from Assam were in Nepal when the quake hit the country on Saturday. “Our information is based on the enquiries made by the people to the helpline numbers we have opened after the crisis,” she said.
“The Ministry of External Affairs told us that 40 people from Assam have already been brought back to New Delhi from Nepal since April 25. Apart from this, we came to know that six other people from Assam’s Morigaon district-who were in Nepal-have reached their homes this morning,” she said.
“There are ten people from Assam who have been admitted to different hospitals in and around Kathmandu. We are trying our best to trace the people of the State who are stranded in Nepal,” she said.
“Additional Director General of Police Umesh Kumas has already left for Kathmandu to liaise with the Nepal Government and authorities to trace and rescue the stranded people from Assam. He is likely to reach Kathmandu by Monday evening,” she said adding that the Assam Government is also contemplating bringing people back to the State from Nepal via road.
“There was massive destruction due to the quake. We are not sure whether the road network is alright. We have tasked a police officer to explore the road condition to Nepal and he has already left the station. If there is positive response from him, we would send ambulances and other vehicles to bring our people,” she added.
