A project director of District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) of Assam was caught red-handed by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Department sleuths for accepting bribe of Rs12,000 in her office on Wednesday.
A senior Assam Civil Service (ACS) cadre officer Nandita Knowar is the daughter of former Bihar and Tripura Governor and senior Assam Congress leader Devananda Konwar.
“There was information that Konwar had demanded Rs12,000 as commission for releasing funds of Rs1.20 lakh for construction of the road in Durga Sarobar area in Guwahati. The project was taken up under the MP’s local Area Development Fund (MPlAD). After the information we laid a trap and arrested her on Thursday while accepting the bribe,” said the Vigilance official.
Knowar, however, termed this as a political conspiracy and said that the BJP MP from Guwahati lok Sabha constituency Bijoya Chakrabarty had framed her in wrong charges.
It may be mentioned here that senior Congress leader Devananda Konwar had recently announced that he would resign from the Congress party and join the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) led by perfume trader Moulana Badaruddin Ajmal.
