Security tightened in Srinagar as terror strikes on populous civilian areas feared

An alert has been sounded in capital Srinagar and security was tightened to thwart militants’ possible attempts to strike in the most populous area of the Valley where movement of traffic is showing steady improvement amid continued shutdown and protests in the Valley.

Police and paramilitaries were deployed in strength in most parts of Srinagar on Tuesday as checking of vehicles was intensified to prevent Pakistan-backed militant attacks on innocent civilaians.

A police officer deployed in the eastern part of the capital city said that they have credible inputs on militants’ plans to disrupt peace in Srinagar where people have begun to defy the shutdown call by separatist groups.

Normal life continued to remain affected across the Kashmir Valley on the 88th consecutive day after the killing of Huzbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani on July 8. The separatists are issuing weekly protest calendars asking people to observe a shutdown and hold protests.

However, after the authorities lifted curfew from all localities in Srinagar, the traffic movement, especially that of the private vehicles has increased manifold though public transport still continues to be off the roads.

Some unidentified persons set ablaze two auto-rickshaws at Saidakadal and Babademb areas, apparently to throw spanners on the traffic movement.

Meanwhile, police arrested senior separatist leader and chief of Dukhtaran-e-Millat organization Asiya Andrabi from old Srinagar. She was lodged at Kothibagh police station. Andrabi has been vociferously backing the ongoing unrest in Kashmir and led several anti-India rallies across the valley.
