SEC mulls action against Mamata

The State Election Commission is contemplating action against Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and senior Trinamool Congress leaders for their alleged disparaging remarks against Election Commissioner Mira Pandey.

“The CDs of such remarks have been called for and appropriate action would be taken after watching the replays and in consultation with the lawyers,” a senior official of the SEC said.

Undeterred senior Trinamool leaders continued to follow in the footsteps of the Chief Minister attacking Pandey for holding the panchayat elections during the Ramzan months.

A day after Banerjee vowing “revenge” against the Commission for hatching a “dirty gameplan” in connivance with the Congress and the CPI(M) to destabilise her Government, East Midnapore MP and Mamata’s Nandigram spearhead Subhendu Adhikary on Tuesday said much like the ants Commissioner was getting wings which indicate that her end was nearing.

“like the ants she is getting wings which means her end is coming,” Adhikary said, adding how he would apply the “medicine I used in Nandigram and Jangalmahal” to silence “comrade Mira Pandey.”

Earlier Banerjee had told a public rally at lalgarh how her party could have deposed Pandey “had we got some more MlAs with us” triggering a debate on the ways of deposing a State Election Commissioner who according to the Constitutional provisions could only be removed via impeachment much like the High Court and Supreme Court Judges.

Apparently being criticised by some quarters for forcing the polls during the Ramzan months — instead of cooperating with the Commission to get it done in the month of April or May — Banerjee also tried to shift the responsibility of delayed polls on the courts and the Commission saying “the polls are being held during the monsoon and the Ramzan following a game played by the courts and the Commission.”

Meanwhile, criticising the Trinamool Congress for launching personal attacks against the poll Commissioner, Union Health Minister AH Khan Chowdhury said, “The Trinamool Congress and its leaders has little regards for the Constitution which can be proved by their repeated frontal attacks against the Commission for its lawful acts.”
