Some senior SEBI and RBI officials helped ponzi kingpin Sudipto Sen dodge the surveillance mechanism of the market regulators in lieu of huge money.
Senior East Bengal Club official Debabrata Sarkar who was on Wednesday arrested by the CBI for his suspected links with the mutli-crore chit fund fraud acted as a go-between in the deal joining SEBI-RBI officials and Sen.The jailed Saradha boss who was on Thursday produced before a district court told newsmen about his “intentions to share a whole lot of things with the CBI.” He said Sarkar had taken Rs40 crore from him to buy over the SEBI officials.
“Every month Sarkar used to get Rs10 lakh or more from me to manage the officers in SEBI and RBI,” he said, adding he was willing to give the names of those officials who were in touch with Sarkar. He also told about two Kolkata-based businessmen, both S Agarwals, who had introduced Sarkar to SEBI bosses.
According to sources Sarkar is known to have told the CBI about “one Mr Sil in the RBI” whoplayed a key role in entire case. These “two Agarwals who are father and son” had been summoned by the CBI for questioning sources said adding there were Mumbai-based businessmen also who played a role in the multi-crore fraud.
Interestingly, the Supreme Court which ordered a court-monitored CBI Investigation into the case had wondered as to what the market regulating bodies were doing when Sudipto Sen was cheating lakhs of people through his chit fund schemes.Sarkar who was on Thursday produced before an ACJM court and granted six-day CBI custody had given some vital leads to his interrogators, sources said adding some politicians including MPs and former MPs could be “questioned or arrested soon.”
In fact, responding to a petition filed by the CBI seeking court permission to raid the residences of some Rajya Sabha MPs and former MPs, the Court told the agency that it enjoyed wide range of powers in that connection and that it did not need to seek permission to raid the premises of the MPs.
