Schemes fall flat: Maoists active in 14 S'garh blocks

Published on:

To curb Maoist activities, the Government has been implementing a number of schemes and spending huge money from public exchequer for last many years in tribal dominated Sundargarh district.

However, instead of showing any sign of abatement, the Maoist activities have gone for a phenomenal rise in last eight years in the district. Sources said in 2005, out of 17 blocks of the district, the Maoists presence was found in only five blocks bordering Jharkhand ie Nuagaon, Kuarmunda  and Bisra of Panposh sub-division and Gurundia and lahunipara of Bonei sub-division. In 2010, it spread to another five blocks and by 2013, the Maoist presence was noticed in total 418 villages of 88 Gram Panchayats (GPs) in 14 blocks.

As per the latest report, while the Maoist presence is found in eight GPs of Bisra block, it is seven in Nuagaon block, six in Kuarmunda block, four in lathikata, six in lahunipara, seven in Gurundia, five in Bonei, 12 in Koira, six in lephripara, nine in Balisankara, four in Subdega, two in Bargaon, five in Kutra and seven in Rajgangpur block.

The record says the Maoist presence is not found in Talsar, Hemgiri and Sardar blocks under Sundargarh subdivision.   But in reality, directly or indirectly, the Maoists have presence in almost all the GPs of the district. Besides, they are active in Biramitrapur Municipality area, Rourkela and Rajgangpur town too.  Apart from Maoists, the PlFI, JlT and Pahadi Chetah are also active in certain parts of the district.
