SC to hear PIl against US internet snooping next week

The PIl that raised serious objection to the unwarranted snooping by US intelligence agencies on private internet data of 6.3 million Indians will be heard by the Supreme Court next week.

The PIl filed by former Delhi University law Faculty Dean SN Singh had relied on a disclosure by a former US intelligence officer who claimed that the National Security Agency (NSA) of US had secretly obtained information from internet companies by making them part of a project called PRISM, giving them unhindered access to internet data available with Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, YouTube, Facebook, Skype among others.

Agreeing that the matter required urgent consideration, the Vacation bench of Justices AK Patnaik and Ranjan Gogoi posted the matter for hearing next week. In his plea, Singh has urged court to prosecute the foreign internet companies which abetted and aided the illegal leaking of information without seeking prior consent of Indian users.
